National Defense

Barbara MacDougall, Chairman

The National Defense Committee is celebrating 90 years of service - honoring courage, leadership and patriotism through the DAR mission. The new National Chairman, Julia Rogers says, “The committee will continue to focus on a strong national defense, promote our unique American heritage and encourage the study of our protections afforded by the U.S. Constitution.”

On the Master Questionnaire, questions are asked regarding your chapter work in this committee. So, do you…

  1. Give a 3-minute National Defense report at each meeting?
  2. Use articles from the National Defender for some of these reports? (published Sept.-May & found on the Members’ Website
  3. Have a program sometime during the year on National Defense?
  4. Give any of these medals:
    • Gold ROTC Medal to a university graduate being commissioned
    • Bronze ROTC Medal to a high school or community college student in a JROTC program
    • Silver DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal to a student enrolled in a non-ROTC, but militaryaffiliated cadet program
    • DAR Youth Citizenship Medal to a student in 5th – 11th grade who shows outstanding patriotic leadership
    • DAR Distinguished Citizen Medal to someone 18+ who has contributed to the defense and security of the community, state or nation
  5. Contribute to a state fund for this committee
  6. List members from your chapter who served/are serving in the military
So, as you plan your year, think about setting a new goal for your chapter to answer “yes” to as many of these questions as you can!

Regarding the medals… Last year Iowa Chapters awarded 5 Gold ROTC Medals. I checked on-line and found that we have 12 colleges or universities with ROTC programs. And many of these might have more that one branch of military program. For instance, at Iowa State University, Sun Dial, Solomon Dean and DeShon each award a Gold ROTC to students from different branches. Last year, Iowa Chapters awarded 5 Bronze ROTC Medals. There are 8 high schools in Iowa that offer a JRTOC program. And Iowa chapters awarded 2 Silver DAR Outstanding Cadet Medals. These are for students in military-affiliated programs, of which surely there are more than 2 in our state.

So, if you have one of these programs in a high school, college or university near you, ask me about getting your chapter started honoring a student for their dedication to this great country. Help spread patriotism through the work of the National Defense committee!
