Protocol
Nancy Downing, Chairman
The Protocol Committee was confirmed as
a special committee in 1971 and became an
administrative committee in 1977.
The committee serves to give members
guidance in the ceremonial forms and
courtesies that are established as the proper
and correct etiquette for recognizing and
honoring those in positions of leadership,
remembering always that the fundamental
principles of protocol are dictated by ethics,
courtesy, good manners, and common sense.
The Official
Procedure & Protocol Booklet 2013
can be found here. The protocol for receiving
lines, processions, and seating at DAR
functions has been prepared and revised
through the years by committees of Honorary
Presidents General and others, with knowledge
of the rules and customs of the National
Society and with advice from the Protocol
Division of the United States Department of
State.
The single most important tool for members
to use to insure correct protocol is the DAR
Order of Precedence in the Official
Procedure & Protocol Booklet 2013.
It is important to consult this order of
precedence when planning conferences and other
meetings so that members and guests will be
honored by being placed correctly at various
DAR events as well as in the state boxes in
Constitution Hall during Congress.
