Service to America

Lois Iseminger and Beth Iseminger, Co-Chairmen

President General Denise Doring VanBuren states her “Rise and Shine for America theme illustrates the dynamic underpinning of active engagement with DAR: “Rise” up in service to your community and “Shine” by telling the world about who we are, what we stand for and what we do to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Today’s active (and prospective) members seek to fulfill a purpose and embrace a passion for America—we’re grateful that you are a member, and we welcome your ideas and involvement!”

Ms. VanBuren makes three requests of every member during her Administration term: Get involved! Stay informed! Attract others! The Administration's goal was 10 million recorded hours of service. This has been attained as of June 30, 2021.  Record through the online tally. This is the Society’s mechanism to capture the magnitude of service hours regularly provided. The VanBuren Administration count continues in 2021 and 2022. Help NSDAR double this goal.
  1. Record all your volunteer hours. The goal for Iowa Daughters is to record at least an average of one hour per week. Recording should be an on-going process (weekly, monthly or quarterly) and not a frantic endeavor at the end of the year. We want you to capture your voluminous volunteer service.

  2. Members need to reach out to those individuals who do not regularly attend meetings. Encourage them to record their hours. We know that they are volunteering. Their online posting is an active way for them to participate in their chapter, state and national organizations.

  3. The Iowa Society DAR Service to America Committee annually celebrates the Iowa Chapter that has the highest average volunteer hours per member as recorded via the national online tally. (Access link provided above.) Please refer to ISDAR Eugenia Washington Traveling Tray section for rules and chapter winners.

  4. Chapters should have a National Day of Service project around October 11 to commemorate the founding of our Society. This annual commemoration may be the same project every year or varied according to local needs and interests. Chapters are encouraged to submit their project for the Service to America Award for Outstanding National DAR Day of Service Project. The submission deadline is December 15, 2021. See NSDAR Service to America Committee website for details.

  5. NEW!!!The nationwide “Salute to Service” initiative is a collaborative effort of four national committees – DAR Project Patriot, DAR Service for Veterans, National Defense and Service to America. We intend to spotlight the service of active duty military, veterans, and first-responders. The initiative includes two unique avenues of participation: “Snap-A-Salute” and a Chapter Challenge. See NSDAR Service to America Committee website for details: founded on service."

  6. Share your service project ideas, stories and photos, ask questions and connect with fellow DAR members volunteering in their local communities on the Service to America Committee Facebook Group. See NSDAR Service to America Committee website for details.

  7. Remember Service to America activities when reviewing the National Chapter Achievement Awards Planning Guide and the Chapter Master Report. Refer to the appropriate section on the NSDAR website. Updates are posted.
