National Defense
Lisa Varnes-Rex, Chairman
The National Defense Committee has been a
part of the DAR for over 90 years. The focus
of the committee is support strong national
defense, promote our unique American heritage
and encourage the study of our protections
afforded by the U.S. Constitution.”
Chapter involvement in this committee
includes:
- Giving a 3-minute National Defense
report at each meeting.
- Using articles from the National
Defender for some of these reports
(published on the NSDAR Members’ Website).
- Having a program on National Defense
and reporting it to your state chairman.
- Giving funds to an ROTC or Cadet award
program.
- Awarding the following DAR medals:
- Gold ROTC Medal to a university
graduate being commissioned.
- Bronze ROTC Medal to a high
school or community college student in a
JROTC program.
- Silver DAR Outstanding Cadet Medal
to a student enrolled in a non-ROTC, but
military-affiliated cadet program.
- DAR Youth Citizenship Medal to
a student in 5th – 11th grade who shows
outstanding patriotic leadership.
- DAR Distinguished Citizen Medal
to someone 18+ who has contributed to
the defense and security of the
community, state or nation. **This
award can now be given to a group (for
example, a First Responder
organization). Keep in mind your chapter
will need to purchase the $10
certificate and medal for each member of
the group.
Overall, this committee encourages members to
promote an enlightened public opinion concerning
matters of national defense, to advocate for and
honor our military, to also recognize other
defenders of freedom, and to support patriotic
education!
