DAR
Service for Veterans
Jeanne McMillan, Chairman
The Iowa Society Daughters of
the American Revolution (DAR) remains deeply
committed to honoring and supporting America’s
veterans. We maintain a strong relationship with
the VA Center for Development and Civic
Engagement (CDCE). Through this
collaboration, our Veterans Affairs
Voluntary Service (VAVS) Representatives
and Deputy Representatives serve three-year
terms, appointed at the invitation of the
President General, to act as liaisons between VA
hospitals, clinics, and local DAR chapters.
The DAR Service for Veterans National and
State Committees offer numerous
opportunities for members and chapters to
support veterans and their families in
meaningful and impactful ways:
Volunteer Recognition Programs:
- Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Award
- Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award
- Outstanding DAR Service for Veterans
Award
Ways to Support and Honor Veterans:
- Participate in Wreaths Across America
by attending ceremonies and laying wreaths at
local cemeteries.
- Support Honor Flights in your area
to help veterans visit war memorials in
Washington, D.C.
- Engage with the Veterans History Project
and the Military Women’s Memorial by
interviewing veterans and sharing their
stories with the Library of Congress Military
Women’s Memorial.
- Set up a Missing Man Table at local
restaurants on Veterans Day or other
observances to honor fallen service members.
- Volunteer at VA hospitals, clinics, homeless
shelters, and nursing homes that serve
veterans.
- Support female veterans through
collaboration with women veteran shelters, VA
hospital programs, or by organizing baby
showers and other activities at women’s
clinics.
- Contribute Shoebox Christmas Gifts
to your local VA Hospital during the holiday
season.
- Create and distribute Kindness Rocks,
small, meaningful, hand-painted stones, to
bring joy and encouragement to veterans you
meet.
- Involve youth in service projects that honor
and support veterans, helping to Illuminate
Our Legacy Through Our Children.
In Iowa, there are approximately 181,000
veterans, including 16,000 women.
Many face poverty, housing insecurity, or
physical, emotional, and financial hardships.
These brave individuals have sacrificed in
service to our nation, and they deserve our
continued support.
As members of the Daughters of the American
Revolution, we have the opportunity, and the
responsibility, to make a difference in the
lives of veterans. Our efforts not only provide
critical support but also strengthen community
ties and promote patriotism. Together, we uphold
the mission and values of both our National and
State Society.
Let us continue to honor and serve those who
have so selflessly served us.
