Junior American Citizens

Jerilyn M Klein & Pamela Manning, Co-Chairmen

The Junior American Citizens Committee teaches America's school children, through JAC clubs and contests, the principles of our democratic government and an appreciation for our great country. "

What JAC is -- Junior American Citizens consists of clubs and individuals who participate in these contests and are sponsored by a DAR chapter.

JAC clubs teach organizational and co operational skills through group activities as well as individual leadership skills. Club activities can help Scouts, 4-Hrs, etc to earn badges and recognitions in their respective organizations.

Getting Started
Open the Teacher Packet Folder and print it out for each group/grade you’ll be contacting. Be sure to fill in chapter information before you hand it out.

If your chapter hasn’t been involved in JAC in the past, we suggest you start small. You won’t be so overwhelmed.

Maybe focus on a certain grade or group in schools. Talk directly to the teachers of the groups. Find out who might be interested to be a leader to oversee the contest in their group/school. There are so many great teachers out there who will be excited about this contest and the learning possibilities for their students.

If you have children or grandchildren in school, you can encourage them individually.

Contest participants may enter as many contests as they desire. However, only ONE individual entry per participant may be advanced to the state level. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in disqualification of all entries submitted by the participant.

When to Start
  • As Soon as Possible!!
  • Time is of essence so it’s important to contact your groups and schools in August if possible.
  • Check with the schools when they start their teacher days. Go directly to the schools and talk to the teachers!
Judging and Deadlines
Each sponsoring DAR chapter judges local entries and sends one winning entry from each category. (Good idea to encourage entries into one or more categories or to divide classes into smaller groups.)

Prior to Christmas break Notify schools/groups the names of first, second and third place winners depending on number of entries. Don’t forget to arrange for awards to be given out and pictures to be taken.
