Benjamin Bell was born in 1762 in
Berkeley County, Virginia (now West
Virginia). He first served as a
spy in 1780 warning settlers of
approaching Indians. After the
Revolution, he was a captain and a major
in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
He died in 1853 in Boone County, Iowa,
coming here in 1852 with a son. His
gravesite is in Webster County’s Vegor’s
Cemetery on the bluffs of the Des Moines
River, west of Stratford.
