Jeremiah Hatch

Jeremiah Hatch was born in 1765 and died in 1851.  The Iowa Census of 1850 listed Jeremiah as living with his son, Josephus.  Jeremiah’s father was interested in the Patriot’s Cause and joined the Connecticut men and fought in some of the early battles.  He died in 1776 from a smallpox outbreak when Jeremiah was only ten years old.  There were six other children in the family to raise, so Jeremiah was “bound out” to a miller and learn the trade and earn his support, however, he was treated cruelly so he was easily persuaded to join the fighting and became a “fifer” for his company.  At 15, he joined the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment.  After his service years, he moved to the Midwest with his family to Nauvoo, Illinois.  He left there in 1846 with a Mormon group to Winter Quarters, Nebraska, where his wife, Elizabeth died.  He must have then moved to Iowa to be with his son.  His exact burial site is unknown.
