One of the goals of the DAR is to educate people about American history, culture, and the Constitution. The DAR supports education in a variety of ways, including:
Good Citizenship Awards - Each year, the James Harlan Chapter, NSDAR, recognizes students from local high schools who possess the qualities of patriotism and leadership in their communities.
Constitution Week - Each year from September 17 through 23, we find ways to educate our community about America's most important document, the Constitution. In recent years, our chapter has created handouts for the local schools, and the photo on the right shows a display we created in the Mount Pleasant library.
Support for area grade schools - We hold annual donation drives for our area's schools to give the teachers additional materials and supplies.
Support for national schools - Our chapter also supports schools recognized by NSDAR and recently generated donations to the Hindman Settlement School.
Public Programs - Our chapter organizes and assists with programs on a wide range of topics relating to local history, patriotism, women's issues, and more.
